  1. Well usually we know a days just say fish bowl, but a goldfish is just the common fish everyone knows so they just name the bowl off the common fish.

  2. the media.

technically goldfish CAN live in a bowl but they will have a miserable exsistance and only live 1-2 years in comparison to the 10 years they would naturally live if put in a 10 gallon tank.

if you are a first time fish owner, i strongly suggest getting a single male betta fish in a 3 gallon or getting a 10 gallon tank and getting 4 female betta fish, they are a lot easier to care for

do some research it will help a lot

  3. No. ACTUALLY its a 20+ gallon tank. 10 gallons is to small to hold a fish that is supposed to get within 10-12 inches (fancies) or 14-18 inches(commons/comets).

And no fish should be housed in a crappy bowl.

They make “goldfish bowls” for the simple fact of making money. The pictures and the ways they market those oversized cereal bowls is wrong and big lie. But, if a company, ANY company, can see a way to make as much money as possible from as many gullible people who will believe anything they see, then they will do it. So it may be wrong. It may be cruel. But they are making money off of it. And until people start to learn that there is no cheap solution for keeping fish, they will continue to lie and sell these to the general population.

But the fact is: Goldfish get HUGE and live 10-20 years! With proper care anyway. You’d be lucky to keep one alive for a week in a “fish bowl”.

  4. I’ll just generally describe the history. Hundred of years ago, before electricity, most people only kept their fish in ponds. They bred their fish for color and fin shape, and wanted to show off their hard work. They would display their prized fish for short periods in bowls and other small transport/display containers. Goldfish especially have been domesticated for a very long time, and it was common for breeders to display and sell their stock in the bowls. Thus is was common to see a goldfish in the bowl, and not even think about the pond from which it lived the rest of the time. Sadly people would see the goldfish in the bowls, and people started to think that the bowls were a permanent home and not a temporary transport/display.

The term goldfish bowl is thus a result of displaying goldfish in bowls, and the later wrong assumption that they lived in bowls.
