Populating Your First Tropical Fish Tank
Article by Chloe Heini Taylor
So you’ve decided you’d like to have an aquarium tank? A gorgeous centre piece in your living room perhaps? A talking point? A peaceful, tranquil tropical fish tank within your office? Maybe your daughter has just come home with a goldfish inside a plastic bag from the local fair so you urgently have to construct a home for her new companion or, otherwise, face a tidal wave of tears when it suffocates!?!?!?There’s a plethora of reasons for starting an aquarium but it’s often a good idea to contemplate what kind of fish that you’d like to keep in the beginning. In that way you can make sure you’re purchasing the correct equipment (pump, filter, heater, lighting, plant life, accessories, food etc.) for your future pets.
A good type of fish for the beginner are fresh water fish. There’s a large number of species that are relatively simple to keep and they are, naturally, of a hardy nature.
Work out how many fish your tank can comfortably accommodate – as a rough rule of thumb for each gallon of water that your tank holds you are able to accommodate two inches of fish.
It’s a good idea to buy a small number of fish of the same species that are comfortable in each other’s company ie. They usually live together in groups (or schools) in the wild. Using this method it is simple to see if one of your fish is behaving oddly (commonly a sign that it is ill and may spread disease to your other fish) and take the appropriate action early.
It’s tempting I know to buy a lot of different fish, either individuals or pairs (I know because when I first started out this is exactly what I did without giving too much thought to compatibility or the different needs of the different types of fish. The result was a lot of initial juggling with water temperature and light settings accompanied with certain fish being literally nipped to death and then followed by lots more dead floating fish and the decision to start over again and go back to the absolute basics!!)
Some good school fish to consider are:- barbs, zebra danios, & glowlight tetras.
Always seek advice from your local store as they will have local knowledge about things like the type and water quality in your area. They can also advise on the best way to introduce your fish to your aquarium.
A good place to compare and buy aquatic supplies is Aquarium House (http://www.aquariumhouse.co.uk) They have a wide range of fish tanks for sale (tropical fish tanks, marine fish tanks etc) in addition to quality supplies, equipment and accessories. A lot of the products on their site have been priced checked so that you can be sure that you are getting a great deal.
Good luck with your fish keeping.
