Getting New Koi Fish Used to Your Pond

Article by Azlan and Irda

It is important to acclimate any new fish to its new pond environment, and koi fish are no exception. This process of acclimation begins the moment you buy the fish and are handed the plastic bag containing both the water and the fish. One thing to check is that the bag is sealed with an elastic to cut down on oxygen loss. If you have some sort of blanket, this is good to cut down on light entering the plastic bag and bothering the fish.

When you get home, make sure you do not immediately dump the fish and water into the pond. It is imperative that you float the fish in the bag on top of the pond for at least twenty minutes. And it should be longer than this if the temperature differences between pond and fish water are large. Once both water temperatures are about the same, find a good sized bowl to release the store water and fish into. Then, take a handling net to scoop the koi fish out of the bowl. Never dump the store water into the pond water because by this time there is most likely ammonia in the water from fish waste. Ammonia is poisonous to fish and should be kept out of the pond water as much as possible. The store water should be dumped down a drain.

Unless you are totally positive that the fish you bought are healthy (you really never can be 100% sure), it will be necessary to have extra supplies separate for the new fish. Extra supplies should include a sufficient sized fish tank, with good aeration and filtration. The new fish will need to be kept in there for two to three weeks to observe its health and adaptability. Any equipment you use to handle and care for the new fish should not be used in your other tanks in these first few weeks. Going back and forth with equipment could contaminate your other tanks if the new fish happens to be sick. Your new fish may not eat for the first couple of days in its new home, but this is normal and nothing to worry about.

After the initial period of quarantine, you can introduce the koi to the pond where it will be living. Keep in mind that koi are cold water fish and the depth of the water should be at least one meter deep to account for warmer periods of the year when the water temperature will increase. In climates that have severe winters, it would be wise to have water that is at least one and a half meters deep so that the pond will not completely freeze. Make sure that you keep the pond water aerated and filtered at all times. Also, avoid any dramatic temperature changes in the water as this is very stressful to the fish.

Hybrid Bluegills

Hybrid Bluegills are a cross between two of the sunfish family: the blue gill and the green sunfish. Generally males are the predominate offspring, accounting for 90 to 95 percent of the young. They grow rapidly and often reach one and a half pounds in 2 to 3 years. Many reach 8 and one half inches to 10 inches in length in 12 to18 months after being stocked as 2 to 3 inch fingerlings. They thrive in warm water, 70 to 85?F. They are not sterile as many think but because of the high ratio of males, they are much less prolific than regular bluegills and much faster growing. They do well when stocked with other pond fish such as trout, large mouth bass, channel catfish and perch.

Channel Catfish

Channel Catfish are often thought to be relative to southern states only but do well in Michigan and northern states fish ponds. They thrive in water temperatures ranging from 70 to 85?F and feed on minnows, insects and commercial fish pellets. When raised as 4 to 6 inch fingerlings in the spring, they can grow to 12 to 14 inches long by the fall. Channel catfish can reach 25 to 30 pounds and are very tasty. They do well when stocked with hybrid bluegills, large-mouth bass, walleye and trout. Catfish will spawn in warm water fish ponds when spawning containers are available.

Large Mouth Bass

Large-mouth bass are one of the best predator fish for controlling the number of small fish in a fish pond or lake. They put up a real battle when caught by hook and line. They are often stocked with hybrid bluegills, channel catfish, perch and walleye. Care should be taken to stock predator pond fish before your lake or pond becomes overrun with small or stunted fish.

Fathead Minnows

Fathead minnows are a very important bait minnow for fisherman and provide forage for large pond fish. They generally reach 2 to 3 and one half inches in length and have a life span of 2 to 3 years. They are very hardy and tolerate considerable handling. Spawning begins when water temperatures reach 50-55?F and repeat monthly until waters cool in the fall. They are very prolific breeders, laying 200 to 500 eggs per spawn. Stocking fatheads with game pond fish can greatly increase the growth of the desired game fish.

Mosquitofish

Mosquitofish (gambusia affinis) are small, brownish fish that grow up to approx. 2 inches long. They are used for vector control (fancy word for mosquito control) by municipalities throughout the United States. Many pond owners benefit from adding mosquito fish to their pond since each mature mosquitofish can eat up 300 mosquito larvae a day. They are prolific breeders and readily multiply. They can live well in nearly any water condition including swamps and brackish water. Lime disease besides West Nile Virus is transferred by mosquitoes, so it’s best to keep your pond from becoming still and stagnant which are prime areas where mosquitoes love to lay their larvae. Mosquitofish are a great pond fish to have no matter what size of pond or water garden you may have.

What do you recommend for stocking a new fish pond?

Factors including size, pond depth, location, temperatures, weeds present or not present, structure and clarity all determine what kind and how many fish to stock. Below is an example of the maximum stocking rates for ponds that are 1 acre, 1/2 acre or 1/3 acre. You will need proper aeration. We recommend approximately a 3 to 1 ratio in of non-predator/predator fish. Size of fish shown below can be changed, if desired.

1 acre pond, over 14 feet deep: 500 3 to 4 inch bluegills, 200 4 to 6 inch trout, 100 4 to 6 inch channel catfish, 100 4 to 5 inch perch, 100 3 to 5 inch bass, and 3 gallons of minnows.

1/2 acre pond, 10 to 12 feet deep: 300 3 to 4 inch bluegills, 75 4 to 6 inch trout, 75 4 to 6 inch channel catfish, 75 4 to 5 inch perch, 50 3 to 5 inch bass, 2 gallons of minnows.

1/3 acre pond, 8 to 10 feet deep: 250 3 to 4 inch bluegills, no trout recommended, 50 4 to 6 inch channel catfish, 50 4 to 5 inch perch, 25 3 to 5 inch bass, 2 gallons of minnows.

Commercial Fish Food Pellets

There are a variety of fish food pellets that you may use to feed your pond fish. Some are ideal for warm water feedings which have high protein levels and are great for increased growth and improved immune system. Some fish food have high carbohydrate levels and are designed for cooler water conditions. Check out the fish food available at PondSolutions.com in addition to thousands of other pond supplies.

Want to create a fish pond but don’t know what fish to use or how to stock your pond? Follow these useful tips to grow great tasting pond fish such as trout, yellow perch and walleye.

How To Build a Fish Pond

To build a fish pond, first decide what type of fish you would like. Some pond fish are cold water fish and require deep ponds around 10′ deep or so where water temperatures are cooler and more consistent.

There are a variety of ways to build a fish pond and what to line it with. Typically, a fish pond is at least 5 deep or deeper with the sides of the pond slanted about 45 degrees towards the middle with one end of the pond deeper than the other. An aerator is placed about mid way across the bottom of the pond to provide aeration. The deeper part of the pond is left undisturbed for the fish. The sides are excavated in such a way to reduce erosion, make it easier to seine the pond and to prevent predatory birds like blue herons from plucking the fish out of the water.

Fish ponds can be lined with fish-safe pond liners or bentonite clay to seal certain soils and form a barrier to hold the water.

Here’s a list of some favorite pond fish to raise, bringing a tasty delight to your dinner table.

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout are the most popular trout for fish pond stocking. They grow rapidly and often gain an inch per month in size from spring through fall and less in the winter. They feed well on natural food and fish food pellets. They can withstand temperatures up to 70 – 72?F for brief periods but like colder water around 50 – 65?F instead. They like ponds that are usually around 10′ deep or deeper which provide more consistent, cooler water temperatures. They can be stocked with other trout or with cool and warm water pond fish. They are moderately cannibalistic. Pond-raised rainbow trout often get to be 24 to 30 inches in length and up to 10 pounds in weight. All trout require moving water and gravel bottom to spawn. They are considered cold water pond fish.

Brook Trout

Brook Trout are usually associated with small streams but do quite well in ponds also. They usually grow somewhat slower than rainbow trout or brown trout but will reach 16 to 20 inches in length and often up to 3 to 5 pounds at maturity. They feed readily on fish pellets but are often moderately cannibalistic on small fish. They are usually considered to be great in taste. Brook trout can be stocked with other trout or warm water fish species. Their preferred water temperature range is 50 – 65?F. All trout require moving water and gravel bottom to spawn. They are considered cold water pond fish.

Brown Trout

Brown Trout are often considered to be river trout but do well in ponds also. They grow rapidly on natural food or pellets but are considered the most cannibalistic of all trout. They can also be harder to hook because of their shy nature. Generally they can withstand somewhat warmer temperatures than other trout, even 70 to 75?F ranges providing the oxygen level is adequate. Brown trout often reach 24 to 28 inches in length and weigh 8 to 10 pounds in pond raised conditions. All trout require moving water and gravel bottom to spawn. They are considered cold water fish.

Walleye

Walleye are a most sought after fish for their delicious taste. They are strictly cannibalistic in their feeding habits and do not feed on commercial fish pellets. When stocking with other cool or warm water pond fish, they can keep down the number of small fish which enhances their growth rate. They do well with yellow perch, hybrid bluegills and bass. Walleye seldom spawn in small ponds.

Yellow Perch

Yellow perch are sought after because of their delicious taste. They are school-running fish and are often fished near the bottom of lakes and ponds. They feed on small fish, insect life, and will feed readily on commercial diets, if trained. They can be very prolific and should not be stocked alone or in small ponds. Jumbos can reach 12 to 14 inches in length if food is sufficient. They can be stocked with most other species especially hybrid bluegills, large-mouth bass and catfish. They are considered cold water fish.

Fish Pond Stocking Suggestions:

Factors including size, pond depth, location, temperatures, weeds present or not present, structure and clarity of the fish pond all determine what kind and how many fish to stock. Below is an example of the maximum stocking rates for ponds that are 1 acre, 1/2 acre or 1/3 acre in size. You will need proper aeration. We recommend approximately a 3 to 1 ratio of non-predator to predator fish.

There are several commercial fish food pellets that you may choose to feed your pond fish. Some have high protein levels suitable for feedings during warm water temperatures while others have high carbohydrate levels suitable for feedings during cooler water temperatures.

Types of cold water fish and feeding

Every type of coldwater fish i could find locally in uk. The main types of cold water fish available in th UK i have in my tank. I prefer to keep a coldwater fishtank (unheated water), but it is limiting to what kind of fish you can keep. I wanted a mix of colours i did also have a silver orf which jumped out the tank and is in heavan, so rememebr always have a good fitted fish tank lid. My tank is a 3 foot fishtank, with sand fake plants and a real bogwood which makes the water a little yellow my fish perfer. i little dirty water is better than clean as the waters they would live in the real world would be dirty. i havehad for about 2 years now and am still hunting for more fish types to add i have 8 fish in total in this tank 4 bigg and 4 small
