There is no question that cichlids are fast becoming one of the most popular pet fishes. This is just understandable given the lovable characteristics of cichlids. If you want to follow the trend, you better acquaint yourself to the different cichlid types. The ones below can be considered as the most popular types of cichlids. Check to see if one of them is the one that you would like to have on your own.

Discus fish

The Discus fish is a common choice because they are very sociable. You see, most cichlid breeds are aggressive and dominant so they are usually hard to incorporate with other fishes. Although discus fishes live in large groups, they are really very fond of schooling. The best tip when taking care of discus fish is to ensure that you get at least three of them. Their fish personality dictates that they be part of a group. Having two or only one cichlid in an aquarium would only make the discus fish sad and lonely.

Angelfish Cichlid

You probably know it as angelfish but this type is very much a part of the cichlid breed. What you should understand is that Angelfish Cichlid is the more obvious choice for people who want fish pets that are relaxed. They are not too aggressive that most people fall in love with their natural grace. Angelfish Cichlids are also very elegant.

Convict Cichlid

These types of cichlids are the most appealing to beginning cichlid owners. You see, Convict Cichlids are very much easy to keep. They also require low maintenance duties. The only downside is that you need to put on effort in decorating its new home. As much as possible, your tank must be very similar to its natural habitatrocky with caves and substrate. Convict cichlids often burrow themselves so make sure you give them enough space to play around.

Dwarf Cichlid

The Dwarf Cichlid is probably one of the most challenging to keep. However, most breeders prefer them over other cichlid types because they are less aggressive than some of its relatives like the Bolivian cichlids. They are also easy to mix with other fishes as long as they are compatible with each other. Although quite active, dwarf cichlids are very popular among breeders and cichlids enthusiasts.

Jack Dempsey

Jack Dempsey is obviously named after the well-known boxer. They are loved because of their colors. They usually have greenish pecks in their tan bodies while they are young. They turn to purple gray when they get more mature. Their green specks usually turn to gold during these times.

Oscar Fish

The Oscar fish is one of the toughest varieties. Their best feature is that they can stand almost any kind of water types. They also grow beyond 18 inches. They also have wide food choices including live food, flakes and pellets. It is easy to know if you aren’t feeding Oscar fishes enough. Their colors wouldn’t be that bright if they are unhealthy. So, it’s the sign to watch out for.

Betta fish come from many different locations, and have a variety pigments and tail designs. The most well known species are the Betta Splendens, Betta Bellica, Betta Coccina, and Betta Picta.

Betta SplendensThese fish originally came from Thailand, fully grown are around 3+ inches, and typically survive around three years. They will fight and kill any other males, and have been known to destroy their babies.

Betta Bellica – Malaysian Fighting FishThese species of Betta were first found in Malaysia. They are unique in appearance, bigger and sturdier than all other species. The males are much larger than the females, and both the male and female will have a heart looking back fin. Malaysian Fighting Fish are ok not submerged in the water. They will sometimes jump out of the water when eating, and even rest on top of flora above of the water.

Sumatra Fighting FishBetta Coccina originate from Sumatra. They are beautiful fish, usually colored red or brown with vivid blue eyes. They are the most diminutive of all species. Males and females are relatively skinny and are about of similar height.

Betta PictaSpotted Bettas are the least aggressive Betta fish, and are easy to breed. They also are not as brightly colored as other types of Bettas, and are therefore also not extremely seen often in pet shops. Typically females can live together, but with this unique type of Betta, it is wise to keep them apart because the female will sometimes fight over the males. The Variety of ColorsIn their natural habitat, bettas usually only display vivid coloration when upset and females generally have lighter pigmentation than male fish. Despite this, betta fish breeders have had success in creating vivid coloration stay for both the male and female all the time, not simply when angry. Several of the colors that are available include red, blue, turquoise, orange, yellow, green, bright blue, royal blue, apricot, peach, white, and albino. There are one colored betta fish, and some types of bettas are even multi-colored. Despite this aggression, they can be a very partner for other Tank Mates for Bettas.

Betta Fish TailsBetta fish tail types are an additional unique marker of the species. The most commonly seen, and cheapest is the Veil tail. On the other end of the spectrum, the halfmoon Betta fish is the rarest of Bettas. The halfmoon Betta’s tail fin spreads out into a full half circle, and is incredible to observe.

There are a wide range of additional tail kinds including the delta, super delta, fan, spade, pin, double and crown.

i’m pretty sure that no fish should go with beta fish. they are extremely aggressive (because they are fighting fish) so they’ll kill any other fish that you put in with them. if you are interested in getting more fish i would get some gold fish or another good idea would be to go to a petstore and ask what fish get along with each other. i hope everything works out

Betta jump – Betta fish learning to jump and eating food off the tip of my finger. He likes jumping!

This is my fish and i’ve been teaching it to jump. He is getting a new bowl today. Thanks for all your cruel and funny comments….. The fish is no longer alive and he died while in a larger place. I had the water low before i got a new place for him so he wouldn’t jump out of it at the time. I never expected to see PETA on my ass about it haha :p Anyways i hope you enjoyed seeing this video and some may have not! It is a cool trick either way!

I would love to have a discus fish (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) into my fish tank. Problem is, it’s only 29 gallons. The dimensions are 30 inches (length) x 18 (height) x 12 (depth).

I dont think a discus would work. you could try a anglefish.

Discus fish update 21.07.10 – Feeding after a 20% WC + Pictures!

This is the first time that the lights have been on, so they need some time to adjust. During their time in the smaller tank, they live in natural sun light; the tank was situated right next to the window where the beam of light can pentrate through the window (blinds). Their colours are much sharper and are all natural. They have not been fed any colour food. My feeding regime is 5 times a day, the following time that they are being fed are at: 7 AM, 11 AM, 3 PM, 7 PM and 11 PM. Water changes are done 1 hour after each feeding, or whenever they finish their meal. Each water changes are done in 20-40%, thus equating to a total of 100-200% water change. Juvenile discus require ammonia, and nitrite free water in order to grow large and healthy. A vast array of diet is also the key to success! These juveniles are still being raised in a bare bottom tank, fed 5 times a day with various food, including my own Beefheart mix, Marine Formula One flake food, Hikari Tropical Discus Bio-Gold pellet food, and Australian Freeze Dried Blackworms. I have been looking for some other food like, Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef, but everywhere is sold out. It is important to feed juvenile discus fish with high protein food whilst they are still young, this ensure rapid growth before they start to slow down when they reach 10months old. I have had lots of experience with angelfish, neon tetras, zebra dianos and assorted guppies but recently I have decided to buy two or three discus after doing my homework about them. Can anyone offer helpful suggestions concerning these fish? Thanks!
My intentions were to put them in a aquarium of 50 gallon capacity and after they grow some to to move them to a hundred gallon tank, however I a beginning to have doubts about getting discus fish now!
