The Betta fish, also know as the Siamese fighting fish, is one of the most popular types of fish in the world. It is one of the most beautiful and recognizable types of fish. It’is also low maintenance compared to other pets. Caring for Betta fish is relatively easy as long as you follow a few simple rules.

Follow the Betta fish care tips below and you’ll be on your way to a happy and healthy pet.

1. Betta’s need plenty of room to swim around, so a large enough bowl is important. They also need access to the surface. Betta’s have a specialized respiratory organ that allows them to breath air directly from the atmosphere.

2. Betta fish do not require water filtration (in fact, they do better in standing water) so no pumps are necessary. But the water must be replaced every 3 days. The new water should sit out for 24 hours before being added to the tank.

3. The ph level of the tank should be maintained at 7. You can pick up a ph testing kit at any pet store.

4. Betta’s love warm water. They originate from the tropical waters of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Keep the tank temperature at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. He may get listless if the temperature drops below 75 degrees.

5. They are called fighting fish for a reason. Males are territorial and will fight each other to the death if kept in the same tank. Females can coexist and so can one male with many females.

6. Betta fish can jump, so keep the tank covered at all times unless you want to come home to a dead Betta fish on your carpet.

7. Avoid using soap when cleaning the inside of the tank and accessories. Soap residue can affect the ph level or harm the fish.

8. Betta fish are not picky eaters and will eat frozen bloodworms and Betta pellets without a fuss. But they prefer live food (in the wild their diet mostly consists of insects that fall into the water), so treat them to some brine shrimp once in awhile.

Once you own your Betta for a while you’ll become familiar with his personality and develop an instinct for caring for Betta fish. You’ll be able to spot if your little friend isn’t himself and you’ll know exactly what to do.

Although part of the appeal of betta fish is that they can be kept without the need for a large aquarium or with a complicated filtration system, betta fish care does require some effort. Betta fish are beautiful when kept healthy and happy, and this article will give you the basics on how to achieve just that.

Good betta fish care dictates giving your pet a continer that is large enough for the fish to swim around at least a little bit. Bettas can of course survive in the little jars they are often sold in, but this is far from a healthy environment and bettas in such tight quarters may fade in color and become sluggish. Bettas don’t need a huge amount of space, but a little room to swim, and a decent amount of surface area for the fish to get gulps of air in are recommended. As a suggestion, a 1 to 2 gallon fish bowl is a good option.

Betta fish can and will jump, so whatever container you are using, be sure that it can be covered (dont use an airtight cover!) to prevent your fish from jumping out.

The next part of betta fish care that is critical to the health of the fish is to keep the container and water very clean. Part of keeping the container clean is to use care when feeding your fish. Excess food will accumulate at the bottom and cause bacterial growth and cloud the water. I suggest feeding your fish with the standard betta food pellets by dropping in just one pellet at a time, perhaps 3 or 4 times per day. Not only will this help keep the container clean, it will also prevent overfeeding which can cause swim bladder problems which can kill betta fish.

Another way to make sure the water is clean is to change part it on a frequent basis. How much water to replace and how often is largely dependent on the size of the container, as waste products build up much more quickly in small containers than in larger ones. If your fish is in a container with half a gallon of water or less, it is a good idea to change at least a third of the water every 3 days or so. For a one to two gallon or larger container, changing about a third to a half of the water about once per week should be sufficient.

When changing the water, there are various test kits, water treatment chemicals, aging techniques, etc. that can be used to remove toxic substances like chlorine and to establish the preferred neutral pH of the water. There is a much simpler trick to betta fish care with regards to water though. You can buy ordinary distilled water and not have to test or treat it at all. Distilled water is free of contaminants and has a neutral pH – perfect for your betta fish, and much simpler than trying to get your tap water to the right chemical balance! Just be sure to get DISTILLED water instead of spring water, drinking water, etc., in order to ensure purity and the correct pH.

Good betta fish care also means keeping the water to a warm temperature. Bettas come from tropical regions and are happiest at temperatures at about the 75 to 80 degree (Farenheit) range.

Betta fish prefer to rest on objects off of the bottom of the container, so some decorations are a good idea. It is important to use objects that are smooth and don’t have any sharp edges, because the betta’s fins are very delicate and can be easily damaged. If the material is too rigid, even artificial plants can cause fin damage to your betta.

Using the tips you have just learned, you will be well on your way to keeping a healthy, happy betta fish. The show of brilliant color on your fish will be your reward for your excellent betta fish care.

Took this video on Wednesday, August the 9th of 2006 around 2-3 PM (FACT: Bettas mate until the female is depleted of eggs! The bubble nest is real, my male betta made all those bubbles. Crown tail Male and Round tail Female This is -I think- a 10-gallon tank that I bought from Wal-Mart. It was a complete kit, with filter. I cannot recall the price, but I think it was about ?) Update: 12-18-08 I no longer have these bettas or any other fishes. I gave up my fish hobby after my baby was born. I have a really busy schedule, therefore have no time to care for the fishes. Also, both of these fishes are deceased. The fry(s) did not survive b/c of me. I’m not a breeder, therefore didn’t really bother to buy a seperate tank to incubate them. I just didn’t have any room in my bedroom for another tank.
