On January 9, 2010 Brevard County along with the entire state of Florida experienced some of the coldest temperatures on record. Sleet and snow flurries weren’t an uncommon sight. The extreme temperatures were the ending to a week of cold days and freezing nights. With the weather here to stay for a few more days before things begin to heat back up, we decided to go exploring a little. The fragile ecosystems are not use to cold temperatures especially with the water temperature dipping well below normal. This had many anglers throughout the state concerned, especially with more tropical fish species like snook and tarpon. Redfish and black drum, along with other species, have a much higher tolerance for the cold. While exploring local ponds we found many different species laying on the banks in the brackish waters. Some fish were already dead while others were barely hanging in there. There were also several fish skeletons further up along the banks that died throughout the week and became food for foraging birds. We saw myan cyclids, common snook, fat snook, tarpon, ladyfish, and mojarra. Hopefully some of the stunned fish can hang on a few more days until the sun warm air decide to back. Unfortunately it is doubtful, but nature has a way of working things out. We can only hope that most fish found their way to warmer waters and weren’t affected by the freeze. I bought 3 discus and put them in my tank. Its been a few days and all they do is stay grouped in the corner. I havn’t seen them eat or really gone out from that corner. Is this normal? What should I do about it?

Also not a great community tank fish preferring to be with only other discus. So if they are in with others get them their own tank.
I’ve had them and they never seem to last long even with proper water and discus only tank.

Discus Fish question by MONKEYBARRS: Anyone know about special needs of discus fish aquariums?
I’ve been wanting to start a discus tank, but don’t know too much about special requirements. Are they pretty hardy fish? How many can I put in a 55 gal. tank…and can I add them all at once, or only a couple at a time? Is reverse osmosis a requirement? I have a lot of experience with aquariums…but not discus. How do they compare to plain tropical fish and Oscars as far as hardiness? Can they handle variation in water parameters?

many discus keepers do twice weekly water changes.
a 55 is sufficiant for Discus, i’m not sure how many though. i’ve heard varying things on stocking these guys.
to get that perfect water some Discus keepers have peat in their filters. they’re NOT hardy when it comes to variations in water parameters and tankmates need to be chosen carefully.

Discus care is such a large subject, and discus can be so sensitive that I really don’t know how best to approach your question. What I always look at is the discus advice column in tropical fish hobbyist magazine, they tend to have some good tips.
