Caring For Bettas – Fish Care Tips to Help Them Thrive

Article by T L Gallamore

So you’re all ready to house a new Betta fish and embark on a new endeavor… But you want to make sure you’re really ready. Well you’re one smart cookie then, Bettas are a very delicate creature (a very rewarding one too though!) and research is king when it comes to being a good pet owner. Below is a guide on the basics of owning a Betta fish. Of course there is more than this to know, but I’ll get you started!

Betta Costs And Setup

As far as pets go, Bettas are fairly cheap, but you will want to make sure you have a little bit of money to provide everything your new pal needs. The supplies you need to get to properly house and care for a betta are: A 5 to 10 gallon tank (don’t get fooled into thinking he’ll thrive in a vase), drops that remove chlorine from your tap water, Betta fish pellet food, rocks for the bottom of the tank, a heater, a thermometer, a filter, and some basic decorations. Depending on what you pick out, these items should cost between $ 75 and $ 100. This includes the costs of your Bettas fish itself. One great thing about these costs though is that they are all one time so you shouldn’t have to be spending money after your initial purchase (i.e. bottle of food pellets can last years).

Feeding and Temperature: Maintaining Your Bettas

Fish are a hardy bunch in general, and the Betta species tries its best, it really does… But try as they might, Bettas respond poorly to overfeeding and harsh changes in climate. It is important to dole out a Betta fish’s food in small portions, REMEMBER: their stomach is about the size of one of their eyes. For this reason I give my Betta Gilbert just two small pellets in the morning and two in the evening.

As far as temperature goes, anywhere between 76 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit should be comfortable, I like to keep my tank around 82. No matter where you have the temperature, the key is to keep it constant. Take the weather into account as large swings in temperature can be stressful to Bettas. Fish like to be comfortable too.

There’s a lot more to know about the specifics of keeping a thriving Betta alive and most deadly Betta mistakes occur without the owner even knowing what’s going on. I found my path to giving Gilbert the best life possible and my “salvation” so-to-speak in Betta Care Made Easy In just a few minutes I learned a whole lot about little things I was doing that were harming my fish and the small cost of the care guide became quickly worth it.

Betta Fish question by Kristen: What types of fish can I put in with a Betta fish?
I have a small aquarium and I want to put a least two more fish in it. But I know Betta’s fight with each other, so what type of fish can I put in without the Betta fighting it or vise vera?
(I want fish that can survive in a tank without an air pump system)
My tank is less than a gallon~
Currently the betta’s tank is just for it.
But I’m looking into a larger tank.

An aquarium in your home or office can produce a background which will add a definite degree of peace. There’s something very tranquil when watching the discus swim across their aquarium, also the designs displayed if your fish tank incorporates tropical fish can be extremely exquisite. For anyone who is planning on setting up a tank and will be in particular using the tropical selection of fish, then a fun part of this collection is going to be discus. They are about as close to a family pet as you can possibly get when it comes to fish, merely because they will react to the enviroment out side their fish tank by simply following people’s activities, tap themselves against the glass any time you decide to feed your fish, and will even eat out of your hands. That’s what tends to make discus fish an desirable element for any fish tank, however discus care can call for a little hard work.

For starters, it’s important to remember all the brand new fish that’s about to be placed into an existing tank is required to be quarantined for two weeks, just to be certain it’s not infected with any parasites or disease. The discus fish is extremely vulnerable to those types of disease, so keeping a clean tank is vital for the health of the fish. An easy approach to maintain a cleaner aquarium is to be sure it is at the least 55 gallons since this can help avoid pH varying too much.

A discus, like nearly all tropical fish, requires a water temperature of between 82 and 88 degrees , therefore , make sure you sustain that amount to help keep it happy. They’re a playful joyful fish and enjoy to hide and play, therefore adding some objects for example ornaments and plant life permits these fish to conduct themselves the way they do in their natural environment. As said before, discus fish will let you know when they’re wanting to be fed, therefore pay attention to the hints which supports you conserve a regular feeding timetable. Feeding them too much or too many times can bring about health conditions, thus it is very important to avoid overfeeding in discus care.

As friendly as discus fish can be, they are nevertheless a little sensitive, hence lighting and aquarium position play a major role in their well being. Keep your fish tank in a place that isn’t subject to many people walking back and forth and put a bright light above the tank to eliminate risking potential shadows on the tank which might surprise the discus fish. And finally, ensure that you replace the water once a week, but keep it to roughly 20-30% of the overall volume of water, as too much change too quickly can upset the discus.

A fish tank is an excellent improvement for the home, and also by by adding discus fish, you would be very happy to find that the fish tank takes on another amount of enjoyment. When you adhere to the tips outlined above, then you’ve got the very best possibility of having fish who are joyful and whose behaviour will reflect that.

Knowing How To Clean A Fish Tank

Article by Malcolm Ivinson

Knowing how to clean a fish tank is required knowledge for excellent fish care and aquarium beauty.

Filtration systems are necessary, since the filters help to keep your tank free of algae and harmful chemicals and bacterium, which can lead to poor fish health and even death. There are different filtration systems to choose from chemical, carbon, mechanical, and biological. These in turn include internal, external, and under-gravel filtration systems.

In addition to filtration systems, you will also want to understand water treatments because good water treatments will remove the pollution that filtration systems miss.

Knowing how to clean a fish tank information also needs to be based on the different types of fish that you could keep. You will find a wide selection in both saltwater and freshwater fish.

Freshwater Freshwater fish have advantages, since they adapt to most Aquarium types. For this reason, freshwater fish is often the first choice for hobby starters. Freshwater fish are tropical and cold-water fishes. The freshwater fish include the common goldfish, Reed fish, Banjo Catfish, Bumblebee Goby, and so on. Most freshwater fish adapt well to peaceful clean water but there are a few that prefer peaty waters.

Goldfish are small colorful fish, which come from eastern Asia waters and are normally housed in tanks, aquariums, or ponds. They tend to adjust to cool slow, flowing waters. Therefore, you may not need to purchase a heater for this breed, providing you are only housing compatible species. They can adapt to a variety of water temperatures and can live well in tropical environments. They are very adaptable but they need oxygen and that is why most of them swim to the surface to gulp air, oxygenating their system.

Reed fish on the other hand require water temperature set at 73 degrees or 79 degrees Fahrenheit and tend to enjoy well-planted tanks; therefore, this breed may not dwell in goldfish water.

Saltwater Saltwater fish include the Powder Blue Surgeon and the Clown Surgeon. Additional saltwater species are the Gold Rim Surgeon, Leopard File, Orange Fin Anemone, Black Back Anemone, Clown and Red Girdled Anemone, Frog and the Yellow-Tailed Anemones. Saltwater fish tend to enjoy reef based tanks full of underwater ridges, rock and coral.

Once you establish the type of fish you want to keep you will be in a position to choose your fish tank. Once you decide your choice of breed and aquarium, you will then need to learn such things as where should you locate the aquarium in your home. You want to make sure that your floors will support large aquariums. The tank should be placed on sturdy flooring, and stands.

In addition, you want to avoid putting the tank near windows, heaters, and doors and remember that light will increase bacteria and algae build up. So you will need to learn how to clean a fish tank the right way. You also need to be aware of the following fish medicines, equipment, food, electricity supply, filters, air supply, heaters, etc.

Knowing how to clean a fish tank is important but is only one facet of the fish keeping hobby.

Discus Fish question by I LOVE HARRY POTTER!: How big of a tank do I need for discus fish?
I know they are schooling fish. How big of a tank do I need for the SMALLEST possible school? (Plus 1 male beta, but it isn’t like that’s going to change the number drastically.) I want to know how much these beautiful things cost, how hard they are to maintain, and the absolute minimum for a tank (and about how much the tank will cost.).

Discus Fish best answer:

Answer by Drew N
I would say minimum of 55 gallon. You can mainly keep angelfish with them. A Betta will be eaten after so long. They are around $ 50-$ 300 depending on what kind you get. Only get around 4 when you do use a 55 gallon.

Discus fish update 17.10.10 – Brief update + Pictures!

Been having some tough time, two months ago the light on this fish tank (as shown in the video) went faulty and started to make weird noises (almost as if it were to blow up). Hence, I don’t turn on the fish tank light anymore. In addition, the heater for the storage tank cracked and no longer work. This occured on the same day, how bad is that? This means I can no longer do large water changes anymore, I have no time to go out and buy a new one. In this video, you could also see that this heater is getting faulty too (water is trapped inside); yes, this worries me. Furthermore, I made the biggest mistake ever, I wormed my fish for precaution but more damaged were caused than good; this was done beforehand when I moved them to the large tank. They went off feeding for weeks and this in turn slowed down their growth; how frustrating! They no longer feed from my hand as I have no time, when I tried they don’t accept the food anymore, I believe this is due to the stress caused by the de-worming process. Moreover, I don’t feed them as much now since I can no longer do large water changes (now that it is winter, the temperature is far too cold to do large waterchanges, especailly without a heater in a storage tank) Summary: I am sure you could figure out which one I like and dislike the most. WILL UPDATE WITH MORE INFO AFTER (when i’m not busy). Tiger Turquoise 8 months old, 229 days old as at 17.10.10 DOB = March 1st 2010 Red Turquoise 7 months old, 201 days old as at 17.10
