Techniques To Look After Betta Fish

Article by Gary Smith

If you are thinking about having a fish as a pet then a betta fish is one of the finest options you have. Priced around an insignificant $ 6, you may have them without even giving a second thought to your financial position. Besides, betta fish are easy to look after. However, there are categorical things that you’ve got to know if you want your betta fish to be more active and happier too.

One of the first and the most important things you’ll need to take excellent care of your betta fish is a gallon bowl. Most pet shop owners will say that a single cup of water alone will be sufficient for your fish. However, this is not true. Of course, a betta fish will stay alive in the miniscule cup of water but it will not stay healthy. If you wish to keep your betta fish happy, you have to have one gallon bowl at least. And, if you can get a 2 gallon bowl, it is even better.

Make the right selection of the bowl. It is essential to grasp that when employing a little bowl, the temperature of the water has a tendency to undergo lots of fluctuations. The temperature becomes very hot during the day and drops down seriously in the night. This of course is not a favorable situation for the well being of the fish. Furthermore it becomes essential to change water in a small bowl daily. On the other hand if you make use of big bowl, you can go on with the same water for a period of minimum of three days.

Ideally, you need to keep just 1 Betta in a single bowl whether or not the bowl is fairly large. Many folks make the error of keeping a few Betta fish within a single unit without realizing that these fish rarely ever get along with each other. Even fishes of the choice sex have an inclination to attack one another, which makes survival for either a tough prospect.

It has been observed that betta fish needs a lot of heat for its survival. The temperature that is most fitted for the well being of the betta fish is seventy five degrees to 80 degrees. Such a temperature can be simply maintained in the summertime season. However, it is obvious that in the nights the temperature of water lowers down. This can negatively affect the health of your pet fish. In order to avoid such situation, you can employ the tube heaters. In this context rubber cover flaps can also turn out to be greatly beneficial. Additionally you can offer heat to the betta fish by simply placing it on a seedling heat pad.

Yet another thing that you must keep in mind, while looking after the betta fish is that you pay close attention to its dieting habits and patterns. It is vital that you feed the fish only in moderation. In this example feeding the fish only once per day is suffice for the whole day. Also make sure that the food that you offer to your pet betta fish is not more in size than that of the size of the eye of the fish.

Therefore, simply follow these convenient tips and you can look forward to a long and satisfied life for your Betta fish.

Betta Fish question by kakakaka: Can Betta fish live peacefully with tetra and goeramis?
I have a new 125 liter aquarium 80/35/50 (cm)(black 1mm sand) and would like to know if I can have betta fish, neon tetras, and goeramis live together?

If not what, setup would you recommend to got with the bettas?

Betta Fish best answer:

Answer by Stephanie L
NO! Bettas are not compatible with gouramis. They are both aggressive fish and will not get along. I would choose the gouramis, as you can have several of them (dwarfs) in your tank since it is so large. You can’t have male bettas living together, but females can live together sometimes. The tetras should get along with both the gouramis and the bettas.
Oh, and I would like to add, the best tankmate for a betta seems to be the dwarf african frog! if you already have a betta, i would put a frog with it.

The Betta Fish Secrets newsletter is a genuinely helpful and informative free media source for Betta owners.

There is some irony in my attachment to my Betta, because I used to make my living as a commercial fisherman. I used to hunt fish instead of caring for them and often harvested thousands of pounds in a day. Now things are different, I have an 8 to 5 shore job and a little red and blue pet fish. Nothing is too good for my Betta. I know I am getting expert advice from Betta Fish Secrets, advice that will keep my Betta healthy and maximize his chances for a long and disease free life.

Adam knows Bettas. He probably knows them far better than anyone at your local aquarium shop because he is a specialist rather than a “jack of all trades”. Much that is right for common aquarium fish is actually wrong or suboptimal for Bettas. Would you have thought adding salt to a Betta’s water was a good thing? Well, it sure is. Salt keeps fin rot diseases away, but the dosage is critical.

Adam will guide you to the proper feeding, environment, temperature and health care for your Betta. My Betta is noticeably happier, more active and healthier since I adopted the simple and inexpensive suggestions found in Betta Fish Secrets. If you dont think a Betta can really be happy, try feeding him some rinsed live brine shrimp. It’s as close to a grin as you will ever see on a fish.

Betta Fish Center really helped me make a better environment for my two beta fish. When I needed some tips on how to specially care for my fish, I went to google to find a site on care and environment for my betas. This site was one of the first ones, but I went to seven or eight other sites before looking at this one. I really enjoyed getting the emails that gave me tips on how to care for my betas. The most helpful thing for me was the email where I found out how to make my beta comfortable.

What You Need To Know About A Betta Fish Tank

Article by Eddie Lamb

Ever heard of Betta Fish? Betta fish are probably the most recognized type of fish in the aquarium trade and they are often sold in tiny cups of water. Although this controversial and hotly debuted practice is considered as being inhumane by many hobbyists. Betta fish are a quite extraordinary type of fish which takes most of its oxygen from the surface, meaning that they are therefore able to exist in oxygen depleted water.

Betta fish are bred in captivity, and what happens is that first the male betta fish builds a bubble-nest at the surface, which is done in order to signify his readiness to mate, and once the female lays eggs, the male then scoops up the eggs into his mouth and spits them out into the bubble nest. Then, the male will tend to the nest until the young betta fish hatch.

Generally, betta fish prefer warm temperatures of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and while the betta fish is able to breathe oxygen and survive in non-ideal conditions for a certain period of time, it is still not recommended to keep them in a bowl or small container without heat and filtration.

Where Can I Find a Betta Fish Tank?

If you are looking for a betta fish tank, you can rest assured in knowing that there are many locations available to you that offer them. You can usually find a betta fish tank at any upscale aquarium store, although some will be pricier at certain stores than others. This is the same with basically everything else however, so as with anything else, when looking for a betta fish tank you will want to put some time and consideration into your decision, so that in the end you can get the best quality and worth for your money as possible.

Once you have your betta fish tank, you need to remember to clean it frequently, and platies, guppies, and other small fish are fine to put in with your bettas. However you should avoid small neon tetras, as bettas have been known to dine on them.

Also remember that although you have most likely seen bettas in small containers of water, you should refrain from doing this, as your betta fish will not thrive properly. Basically the minimum size should be a standard goldfish bowl, and 2 to 5 gallon tanks are even better.

Betta Fish question by Morgan: What other kinds of fish will get along with a group of female betta?
I’m getting a group of 3 female betta fish for my 10 gallon tank (females don’t fight besides the pecking order establishing stuff) and I was wondering what other fish get along with betta and are native (or not, which ever) to their natural habitat? Or should i just keep betta? I’ve seen and heard of people keeping other fish in the tank. It’s relitively only the males that are dangerous (ok, not 100%) but im already going to have some Otocinclus to keep to tank clean.

The female betta fish are so sweet, unlike the psycho males that fight all the time and even kill the females
I just read in wikipedia that you should always keep at least 3 females together since if you only have two the dominant one will bully and eventually kill the submissive one, but with 3 a hierarchy is established. So i am set on 3, I’ll have plenty of hiding spots, and continue trying to figure out tank-mates

Betta fish are beautiful creatures which make very nice pets for all levels of aquarium enthusiasts. They are easy to maintain and they are also quite cheap to keep healthy and happy, all you need is a little bit of information on betta fish care before you begin to set up your tank. Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish are particular creatures and they need certain environments in order for them to thrive and remain happy and healthy. Here are a few things that you should take into consideration before purchasing your betta fish.

Firstly you need to make sure that you have all of the necessary equipment that is required for keeping a betta fish. They are not huge fish; however they do need quite a bit of room in order to survive. This means that you will need at least a 5 or 10 gallon fish tank. If you are planning on breeding betta fish, then when it comes to betta fish care it is better to opt for the 10 gallon tank, but if you are only planning to keep one betta, then a 5 gallon tank is more than sufficient. Once you have your fish tank, you might be thinking that you are ready to purchase your betta, but you would be wrong! You need more than just a large fish tank in order to keep a betta fish happy and healthy!

Next, you need a filter for the tank. A filter helps to circulate the water in the tank and it also keeps the tank cleaner for longer. A filter is a must for all fish owners, whether you are purchasing a goldfish or a betta, you cannot do without one of these. You will also need a heater for your betta fish tank. The reason you need a heater is because betta fish need a specific water temperature in order to survive and a water heater is imperative at keeping the tank water at the correct temperature, without a heater your fish might be prone to diseases or it can even perish.

One of the most important pieces of equipment which you need before you start your betta fish tank is water conditioner. This is a must for any fish tank because the chlorine and chemicals in normal tap water is very harmful to fish, especially betta fish and the water needs to be kept at a specific pH level in order for the betta to survive. This means that you need to add water conditioner which you can purchase from any good pet store every time you change the water.

Betta Fish question by Rachel P: What is an alternate food for betta fish besides the flakes?
Are there any household items (fruits, veggies, etc.) that are good for, specifically betta, fish to eat? I also have to albino dwarf frogs that I have pellet food for but they mostly eat the fish flakes. Are there any grocery foods I can chop up and put in the tank for all of them or just the fish?

Betta Fish best answer:

Answer by Vanessa Y
There are things called dried up blood worms.
I know it sounds gross, but my Betta loves it.
The frog you have will eat it as well, but the frog would be better off with the flakes.
There are little pellets that you can also purchase for your Betta.
They also eat plant roots, and sleep next to them, which is how they got the idea to but the plant on top of the vase and put the fish inside it.
Hope this helps you.
Best of luck! icon smile Betta Fish Care: Starting Out

Feeding Betta Fish – Overfeeding Causes Death – Proper Nutrition and Feeding of Betta Fish

Article by T L Gallamore

As a betta owner for while now, I’ve had my share of scouring the internet for resources that will lead to the best possible care of my betta fish. Here I’m going to compile for you some of the most important things I’ve found out as a Betta owner and give you a resource that has saved my fish through many hardships.

Diet is huge, or is it? Betta feeding is a debate that goes back and forth ceaselessly. Some say one food is better than the other and of course the next forum you visit will be filled with opinions stating that another method of Betta feeding is far superior. So what the heck are you supposed to believe? Well, I’m not sure, but I can give you my honest experiences and try to back them up the best I can.

Pellet food has, in my experience, proven to be the most effective way to get a Betta to eat a well balanced diet. While live foods are often accepted readily by betta fish as they recognize these foods as those native to their environment in the wild (catching insects above the water), they can contain parasites. Furthermore, they contain far less vitamins and nutrients that help a betta thrive and even maintain color. You might be asking, “If we’re only concerned about the ingredients, then why not flakes which contain the same nutrients as pellets?” Because we’re NOT just concerned with ingredients…

Overfeeding is one of the most dangerous threats to a Betta fish in captivity. The flakes in flake food vary in size and it can be hard to feed a betta correctly. Pellets are easy to measure because they are very close in size and you can feed them a set number each day. I have found two pellets in the morning and two at night to be perfect for Gilbert, my young male betta fish.

Check the list below and see what you could learn from Betta Care Made Easy. This is just a small sampling of the Betta subjects covered in how to give your pet the best life possible.

> Do you know how to maintain proper water conditions?> Do you know when and when not to use a filter?> Do you know how to correctly setup a Betta tank and the 5-part checklist?> Do you know what to do if your Betta won’t eat?> Can you properly go about caring for Betta fish that are ill, and know how to diagnose and cure every Betta sickness?> Do you know the step by step instructions for breeding bettas?> Are you confident about heaters and thermometers???
