Betta fish are one of the best of the tropical fish to look after but they do have some particular needs that can easily be met with a few simple additions. The first thing to do is to organize the needed equipment. If you are seeking betta only for the purpose of reproduction you are going to require different equipment than if you were seeking bettas just for the purpose of having a exquisite addition to your home and family.
If you are looking for the intention of merely savoring bettas in your home, bear in mind that male bettas, and in some cases female bettas, do not always get along with one another or with a number of other maine creatures so you will have to have distinct tanks for for each one of your fish. Bettas do not call for a large amount of space but they do require adequate space to move around comfortably in the aquarium. So in fact there should be adequate space for the fish to swim up, to the bottom and to all the edges without their fins touching the sides of aquarium.

One other thing to think about is the fish food that you will be providing the betta that you bring home. This can be live fish food, frozen, freeze dried or in the shape of shots and flecks. Saving a Betta fish from a cramped plastic cup at the pet store is a noble move, but only as long as you can provide a better environment for it. This isn’t difficult, it’s just a matter of getting a hold of the right information. Below I’ve compile a few starter tips for you and pointed you towards a professional guide that has saved my fish’s life.
Temperature: Temperature is a subjective topic in the Betta care world, various “caring for betta fish” websites will give you different answers. Any temperature between 76 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit is suitable for every day life from a Betta’s point of view, the main thing is to be consistent. Once your heater settles and can keep your tank water at one temperature in the acceptable range, try your best to keep it there, rapid temperature fluctuations can be harmful or even deadly to a Betta fish.
Tank Size and Feeding: These are both somewhat short answer items so I’ve combined them into one section. A Betta’s tank size should be 5 to 10 gallons, larger is OK, smaller is not. Betta’s do not live in little tiny ponds as rumored on various Betta forums on the internet. They live in vast expanses of wetlands (BIG puddles) and as such should not be confined to a little 1 gallon bowl.
As far as food goes, I highly recommend pellets for two reasons. They are well balanced and contains everything your Betta needs in it’s diet, and also that they are roughly the same size as one another. What does this mean? It means that you will be able to more easily ration your Betta’s food. Two pellets twice per day (two in the morning and two at night) is plenty!

A fish tank at your home or work place can create a backdrop which bring a real level of relaxation. There is something rather calming about seeing the discus fish glide round their tank, additionally the colorings displayed when the tank is made up of tropical fish is very stunning. If you’re contemplating committing to a fish tank and you are solely targeting the tropical variety of fish, then a stimulating inclusion in ones variety will be a discus fish. They’re just about as near to a family pet as possible by having a fish, simply because they respond to the world outside their aquarium by following their owners movements, tap the glass once you arrive to feed them, and often will also eat out of your hand. That maybe what makes discus such an appealing component for almost any aquarium, nonetheless discus care does demand a little bit of perserverance.
To begin with, remember every new fish that is intending to be put inside a pre-existing aquarium must be quarantined for 2 weeks, basically to make sure it’s not transporting parasitic organisms or diseases. The discus is really prone to those types of diseases, so keeping a parasite free aquarium is important for the sake of the fish. An easy method to have a cleaner fish tank is to make certain it is no less than 55 gallons because this will help protect against pH varying too wildly.
A discus fish, not unlike almost all tropical fish, require a water temperature of 82-88 degrees , consequently be sure to preserve that amount to help keep it in good health. They’re a fantastic joyful fish and like to hide and play, so placing some objects such as decorations and plant life lets discus to behave the way they do in their natural environment. As mentioned earlier, discus will let you know when they are wanting to be fed, so take note of the clues which will help you maintain a consistent feeding routine. Feeding them too much or too frequently can cause health issues, thus it is important to avoid overfeeding in discus care.
As friendly as discus fish can be, they are nevertheless renowned as being a tiny bit skittish, and so lighting and aquarium position play a major role in their well being. Keep the fish tank in an area that is not subject to many people walking back and forth and put a bright light above the tank to lessen risking potential shadows on the aquarium which might startle the discus fish. Then finally, ensure that you replace the water weekly, but keep it to roughly 20-30% of the overall quantity of water, as overmuch change too quickly can irritate the discus.
A fish tank is an excellent improvement for the home, and by by adding discus fish, you would be very happy to find that the fish tank takes on another amount of enjoyment. When you adhere to the ideas outlined above, then you’ve got the very best prospect of having fish who are comfortable and their actions will reflect that.
Discus Fish question by : Do DISCUS fish survive better in pairs?
I have one young discus fish – I am a novice. All the conditions are right in the tank and he seems happy enough.
Discus Fish best answer:
Answer by Mickey P. If the conditions are right he will be just fine, he will be a little more skittish though yes. That also kinda depends on where hes located in your house and what kinda cover hes got to hide in. You also won’t see the natural Behavior’s as much because in the wild they live in groups.
But It won’t hurt him to be alone, and as Discuss are Cichlids, its a rule to keep them as singles or groups of 5 or more. 2-3 fish tend to fight more then if you had 4 + and one alone won’t fight with anyone lol. I would say your good unless you want to add more fish, then in that case add 3 more at least and add them asap so the established fish doesn’t come to think of the whole tank as his own space. Best of Luck
Edit: O ya and one more thing, with Discuss the key to keeping them healthy is water quality, water quality and water quality. Also a healthy balanced Diet of High Quality Cichlid pellets, Blood Worms and Brine shrimp. Never feed him just one food all the time. Feed him Cichlid pellets every morning followed by either blood worms or brine shrimp at night. Switch off between the two every other day. 25% weekly water changes as well are a must along with good aeration for that 84 degree water you have him in. Stick in a few Bubblers if you don’t already have them.

Caring For Bettas – Fish Care Tips to Help Them Thrive
Article by T L Gallamore
So you’re all ready to house a new Betta fish and embark on a new endeavor… But you want to make sure you’re really ready. Well you’re one smart cookie then, Bettas are a very delicate creature (a very rewarding one too though!) and research is king when it comes to being a good pet owner. Below is a guide on the basics of owning a Betta fish. Of course there is more than this to know, but I’ll get you started!
Betta Costs And Setup
As far as pets go, Bettas are fairly cheap, but you will want to make sure you have a little bit of money to provide everything your new pal needs. The supplies you need to get to properly house and care for a betta are: A 5 to 10 gallon tank (don’t get fooled into thinking he’ll thrive in a vase), drops that remove chlorine from your tap water, Betta fish pellet food, rocks for the bottom of the tank, a heater, a thermometer, a filter, and some basic decorations. Depending on what you pick out, these items should cost between $ 75 and $ 100. This includes the costs of your Bettas fish itself. One great thing about these costs though is that they are all one time so you shouldn’t have to be spending money after your initial purchase (i.e. bottle of food pellets can last years).
Feeding and Temperature: Maintaining Your Bettas
Fish are a hardy bunch in general, and the Betta species tries its best, it really does… But try as they might, Bettas respond poorly to overfeeding and harsh changes in climate. It is important to dole out a Betta fish’s food in small portions, REMEMBER: their stomach is about the size of one of their eyes. For this reason I give my Betta Gilbert just two small pellets in the morning and two in the evening.
As far as temperature goes, anywhere between 76 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit should be comfortable, I like to keep my tank around 82. No matter where you have the temperature, the key is to keep it constant. Take the weather into account as large swings in temperature can be stressful to Bettas. Fish like to be comfortable too.
There’s a lot more to know about the specifics of keeping a thriving Betta alive and most deadly Betta mistakes occur without the owner even knowing what’s going on. I found my path to giving Gilbert the best life possible and my “salvation” so-to-speak in Betta Care Made Easy In just a few minutes I learned a whole lot about little things I was doing that were harming my fish and the small cost of the care guide became quickly worth it.
