bettas are better in bigger places than little bowls. i like to keep them in at least 2 1/2 gallons. you can get 2 1/2 gallon bowls at walmart for under 10 dollars. the fish itself can cost between 3 and 7 dollars at most pet stores. well bred ones can cost more than 100. the most available food of choice for bettas is hikari betta gold — it is 2 dollars at walmart — more at other stores.
they do not need light and direct sunlight is a bad idea — it could overheat the water and cook your little buddy.
i feed mine once a day 4 pellets a day. some days i give them frozen bloodworms. 4 bloodworms a day is good too.
good names are your choice.
there are lots of good pages on the web about betta care — one of the simplest i have found is nippyfish.net
Betta fish can be happy in small containers, I kept mine in like a gallon tank, or even a half gallon tank. Yeah, you could probably do the dollar store idea, but a normal tank is like 5 dollars (a small tank)
For cost:
Food: Like 4 dollars but it lasts a long time
The fish: 3 dollars
Some good names, are like fred, larry, bubbles, aqua, nd anything works really.
Feed him twice a day.
The fish water needs to be from 70 degrees to 80 degrees, so if your house is heated it should be fine, maybe stick it in the sunlight just in case.

and this is a link to the basic care:
Ok, the fish itself is only about a couple bucks. The food might be $5 but it lasts a long time. I think that a bowl with pebbles is fine but there is a certain thing that you need to put in the water so that the fish will live. I had a beta fish awhile ago and all I did was put it in a bowl with pebbles and the fish died a couple of days later. After that I was told that there is a certain thing that you need to put in the water (one or two drops a day I think). I don’t remember what it’s called but I’m sure that anybody at a pet store would be able to tell you. You might want to put the fish in a room with a window so that it can get some sunlight but don’t put it directly in the sun. You should feed him once a day at least maybe twice. As for names, my last beta fish was named Ethel.
I hope this helped you somewhat!
The Bettas aren’t that expensive, under $10 I would say, and you can get a pretty vase ( a large one for plenty of swimming space) the food (I reccomend a good floating kind, so it won’t have to eat off the bottom or anything) which can be $5 at the most, and if you have one Beta, that food will last FOREVER! I used to have those pretty little stones in the bottom of my vase, but the food would go between them, and make the tank dirtier quicker, plus it’s a pain to have to scrub them when you clean out the vase. But if you don’t mind the extra work, they are a nice touch. I wouldn’t leave the Beta sitting in the sun all day, but it is nice by a kitchen window or something, where the sun won’t be beating down on him, but he’ll get a little bit.
You can feed him a couple little-uhm-pellets- twice or so a day, I normally do it when I get up, when I get hime from work, and when I go to bed.
First off don’t forget out your fish. They are fairly cheap to buy (Around $4-$5). They usually do well in a regular bowl with rocks. I believe they don’t need air. The name should be up to you and how you feel the moment you get him (the male betta fish are the pretty ones). Sun light? NO you’ll bake him in the sun. Normal houselight should be fine. Feed him once a day. So to get a betta fish it should be no more then $20 for everything. If you really are not sure but want to know more visit the link below:
a bowl and pebbles from the dollar store isn’t enough. bettas are tropical fish, their water need to be warm. get your betta a small heater, a small desk lamb… and clean the water regularly
I would never recommend a bowl to anyone. Bowls are just not the proper environment for any fish. Plus, bettas need a filter and heater, and bowls are not equipped to handle these things. Here is a link to a very nice little setup that would be great for a betta. It’s about $30 and includes everything you would need except heater and the fish. A heater will only be about $15-$25 more. The food is only a few dollars and lasts for a couple months, so that’s nothing really. The betta is also only a few dollars. Keep it away from the sun. It will make the water too hot and will also cause algae to grow. Read up on water cycling, proper cleaning and tank maintenance! This will keep your new betta happy and healthy!
IF IT IS ALRIGHT TO BUY A LITTLE BOWL AND PEBBLES?
It would be so much nicer for your betta (and easier for you, laborwise) if you’d spend a bit more on the set-up. You can find a 2.5 gallon tank for $10 or less, I bought a filter designed for small tanks at WalMart for $10 and a small tank heater for $7. It sounds like a lot compared to a couple of bucks for a bowl and pebbles, but in an unfiltered bowl, you should be doing complete water changes every couple of days or so, which gets to be a pain and is stressful for your betta; but if you don’t do it, he will die in toxic water. On the other hand, in a filtered tank you can do a partial water change every week or two instead, and the betta will be happier and healthier.
Oh! Don’t forget a little bottle of water conditioner, to take the chlorine out of your water, or your betta will die within minutes or hours of being added to the tank. That will cost $5-$10 but lasts a really long time.
HOW MUCH THE FISH COSTS?
Bettas cost between $2 and $20 depending on what kind you want and where you buy them.
HOW MUCH HIS FOOD WILL COST?
A container of food is maybe $3 or so and should last months and months and months. There are foods special for bettas. This sounds weird, but my bettas like ants. Just a few tiny ones from outside collected in a dish of fruit or something.
HOW OFTEN DO I FEED HIM?
You can feed him once or twice a day, just a flake or so. Don’t let food fall to the bottom and collect there. It will rot and ruin your water quality.
DOES HE NEED SUNLIGHT?
Sunlight wouldn’t be good for the fish. It will warm the container too quickly, especially a small one, and rapid temperature changes are very hard on fish. More than a couple of degrees an hour can even kill your betta. Also, sunlight will make the tank grow ugly algae.
WHAT ARE GOOD NAMES?
When you get your betta, get a picture or describe him and ask again. You can get some great suggestions to match his coloration and personality.
Good luck! Bettas are wonderful fish, my absolute favorite.
this is the cheapest kind to own because it doesn’t need a big tank and it can’t be with other fish. feed him once a day. if you google “betta fish care” you’ll find LOTS of info! Good luck! You could name him/her nemo, charlotte…
They can live in at least a 1 gallon bowl, but any smaller is kinda mean. but thats still a lot better than those lil cups at the stores.
a 1 gallon bowl would be about 5-10 dollars.
i would get a tank with a filter and the fish will be happier and you will have less work as far as maintnence.
2.5 gallon kit with lights and filter at walmart is about20 dollars.
or a 5 gallon hex tank with light and filter and cool look is about 35 that is what i keep mine in. he is so happy in his own 5 gallon tank too. the light keeps him warm in the day.
food is like 1.99-3 dollars
the fish at walmart is like 2.50 or so.
i would get one from walmart just to rescue it. they cannot take care of there fish good at all.
the bowl would be fine though and cheaper. i would just change half of his water a week with som water that you let sit out for that long so the chorine evaporates from it.
try to also clean his gravel to get rid of his food and ****.
he does need some light. my moms has a lamp next to it.
Congrats! betta fish are really fun to have, here is a list of supplies you will need:
1. A bowl or tank(0.5 to 5 gallons) $1.00-$10.00
2. (optional) Decorations(plants,pebbles,rocks,ect.) $3.00-$10.00
3. Food $2.00-$5.00 here are some good brands/food:
Hikari-betta bio gold pellets
HSB-Betta pellets
Brine shrip(more expensive but bettas LOVE them, buy live or freezed)
4. A betta fish, Buy from a good breeder (more color and variety)$10.00-30.00, buy from pet store $2.00-7.00 make sure betta has clear eyes, no desinagrating fins and overall looks happy/healthy.

6. Tap water conditioner $2.00-$5.00, some tap waters may have clorine or harmfull chemicals to bettas. Thats why theres many diferent brands to make tap water safe when cleaning out your bowl. I like to use:
Betta pluss(just make sure you put proper amount in)
Jungle Bowl Buddies fiss tabs-personaly a favorite becuase makes tap water safe instantly and over all very safe.
thats all you will need. I like the names: Sushi, bubles, or really anything you like
Bettas can live in sunny places, but dont put them in direct sun light.
I would feed 2 times a day, if your giong with pellets feed 2-4 pellets a day. Dont read what the directions say they just want you to buy more.
You will need to clean there bowls 1-2 times a week, here are the steps:
1. get a plastic contaner and fill with enough of the betta fishes old water(leave enough so that your betta can still swim around) get your net, corner your betta, and scoop it into the net, quikley transfer it into the plastic bowl.
2. dump out the rest of the old water in the bowl into the sink, if you has decorations you sould use a strainer.
3. rinse the bowl out with warm water(DO NOT put any type of soap in)
4. wash the decorations with warm water.
5. Put decorations back into the bowl.
6. the most important part, make sure when filling the new water back into the bowl that you make the old water/new water the same tempeture.(leave 1-2 inches of air before the top of the bowl)
7. Put The proper amount of tap water conditioner in bowl.
I myself have a Betta. They are rather cheap. I got mine for about two dollars at PetSmart.
They have speacal betta tanks also, wich aren’t very big. That is what I use. I’m not sure how big it is, but Its compact, and can easily fit on a desk with lots of room left.
The food is a few bucks i think, for a good amount. I feed my Betta twice a day, with four pellets and he does very well. Right before I leave for school I feed him, and around when i eat dinner.
I don’t put mine in direct sunlight. I think direct sunlight is bad, but so is dark. Mine is fine with just the light in my room.
Bettas are great fish, pretty easy, and they live a while. I recomend cleaning the tank once a week, which is also very easy.
taking care of a Betta fish does not cost to much. You only need any size of bowl or tank and a gravel.Betta fish doesn’t need filters. just feed him two times a day if you feed him flakes. Betta
fish doesn’t die easily.
umm usassaly you can buy a little 1 gallon for 10 bucks or 20 if you get a kit if you get a kit you will probally get food water declornisar small bag of rocks 1 plant and then youll only have to buy extras like rid ich. ich is a common disease in fish wich will cost 5 bucks then an areator a air stone and tubing for 10 bucks and what ever things yu want so approx $30 – $60 cause you might pay 60 if you get like a 10 gal
