I have a tropical aquarium and have some guppies, tetra’s a few loaches and one male siamese fighter. They all seem to get on fine together but I would like to introduce some more fish and am not sure what species will fit in with mine. I have quite a large tank and all my fish are quite small. Anyone have any ideas?
I have a 400 galloon tank and at the moment, I have 3 tetra’s 2 sucking loaches (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri), 1 barb, 1 male guppy, 3 female guppies which is 10 fish in total. I also have 2 trumpet snails to help clean up. There are a some small live plants as well and there is still a lot of space in the tank.

You might want to try some different varieties of tetras. All the danios are good too. I especially like the pearl danios for a nice (but pretty) contrast to the more brightly colored fish.
Platies and swordtails are nice peaceful fish as well. I would, however, keep an eye on your guppies. While all these fish are excellent in community tanks, some of them may occasionally have a tendency to pick on the little guppies with their irresistibly big tails.

It would depend entirely on the species in question, as well as your level of care commitment. A 150 is a huge, blank canvas with hundreds – no thousands – no COUNTLESS options available to you, so why not head to your local fish store and see what strikes your fancy.

As per the goldfish more specifically, if you stuck with the fancy varieties, 3 to 5 at adult size. People say I over estimate on goldfish minimums. That may be true, but goldfish are large growing, full bodied animals that produce a hefty amount of organic wastes (*both solid and liquid) and consume a large amount of dissolved oxygen. Keeping, cooler temperature water will increase the maximum saturation level of DO, but there is still the aspect of wastes to think about.

If you want to see their best size, color, and conformation, stick to conservative stocking with goldfish, or leaving them to ample sized ponds. Several koi and goldfish farms actually grow their fish out in downright giant ponds and use sparing stocking to really see excellent quality animals coming in at the end of the season (*there was, specifically, an article in TFH about four or five years back featuring the Sakai family koi farm and their use of earth ponds for this same technique).

Many people looking to stock their aquarium, gravitate towards tropical fish. The tropical varieties are some of the more colorful sea creatures around. There are various theories as to why tropical fish tend to be colorful. The most prevalent one is simply that, there are a greater variety of species in tropical environments, so of course they would have more color variations as well.

What Are Tropical Fish? Put simply, they are freshwater fish that come from warm, tropical places all over the world. They are comfortable in temperatures ranging from sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit to eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Tropical fish are extremely sensitive to changes in the water temperature. Maintaining the temperature in your aquarium at temperatures below what your fish are used to can cause their health to deteriorate.

For many hobbyists, their first water pet was a gold fish. As they found that they actually liked the entire aquarium experience, many decided to expand their selection of fish by adding tropical fish to their tanks. Unfortunately, many discovered that having the cold water gold fish in the same tank as warm water tropical fish was not good for either of them.

You can’t have any tropical fish with Goldfish. Goldfish are coldwater fish, meaning they prefer coldwater. Tropical fish are…well tropical fish, meaning they prefer tropical water (warmer water). They can’t co-exist together.

And 2 Fancy Goldfish require a minimum of 30 gallons. If you keep them in a small tank, then they’ll get stunted, which means their body stops growing but their organs don’t.
