The Goldfish Versus The Beta

Article by Tonia Jordan

Both the goldfish and the beta are popular choices for pets, and both are believed to be a low maintenance pet. So, which makes the better pet?

The goldfish is the most common pet in the world. It requires a tank, but never a just a small goldfish bowl or small container. Like all other fish, it requires oxygen, and the goldfish gathers oxygen from the surface of its home. Surface area is the important thing in providing enough oxygen for your goldfish.

Measure surface area by multiplying a tank’s length by its depth. For every inch of fish, you should have at least 30 square inches of surface area, and also take into consideration the fact that you’re fish will grow. Make sure to have plenty of room and surface area for your pet goldfish.

Goldfish commonly live at least ten years if cared for properly. They are omnivorous and will eat almost anything. It is recommended to stick with prepackaged fish foods, though. Feed the goldfish no more than it will eat in a few minutes. Leftovers pollute the tank, so it should be removed after feeding. Feed the fish several times per day instead of one big meal.

The ideal water temperature for a goldfish is anywhere from 50 degrees to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, so generally water at room temperature is fine. Tap water is also fine for goldfish, but be sure to let it sit over night so that the chlorine evaporates from it.

In summary, goldfish will be fine in a large, filterless tank with room temperature, de-chlorinated tap water.

Betas are a very common fish kept as pets. The males are the more colorful ones, but never place more than one male in one tank. Betas are also referred to as “Siamese Fighting Fish,” and males will fight one another if kept in the same tank.

The lifespan of the beta is only two to three years, and as they are originally from a tropical climate, Betas need warmer water, preferably in the 80s. They will become listless when water temperature falls below 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The water should also be neutral to slightly acidic pH, so be sure to check the pH regularly, and treat the water as needed.

Just like goldfish, Betas require plenty of surface area for oxygen. They have special respiration systems that require them to get oxygen from the surface, so be sure to house them in a large tank.

To sum up, Betas require special attention to their water. They’re okay in a filterless tank, but the water may need to be heated and treated for pH.

Bottom line – Both fish do not need filters for their tanks, though they do require plenty of surface area for oxygen. Goldfish are generally less maintenance as they require only room temperature, de-chlorinated tap water. Betas require additional heating in most cases, and may also require regular treatments of the water for the required pH level.

Overall, goldfish are the hardier, lower maintenance pet that live a lot longer.

Goldfish Feeding Mistakes and Useful Tips

Article by Florin Iusan

Goldfish feeding is the process in which your goldfish eats and survives so it must be very important. It is quite important and even if it looks like a simple thing to do, there is a lot of room for mistakes. You will learn the how, when and what about goldfish feeding.

Probably the most common source of problems in goldfish feeding and a very popular mistake is overfeeding your pet. This can be done without you knowing it or because you did not care to find out how to do it. Very often people overfeed their goldfish because they love them and think that food is the sign to let their pets know. The disease that results from overfeeding is called swim bladder disorder and it is very common on goldfish forums. People report their goldfish is swimming upside down, not eating or moving, gulping at the top.

When you feed your goldfish, do not feed it more than 2 minutes a day. This way you make sure you are not overfeeding it and you are also not underfeeding your goldfish. Goldfish experts say that there is no such thing as underfeeding only overfeeding. However, if your goldfish do have swim bladder disorder, it is best to stop feeding your goldfish for 2 days or feed your goldfish only peas for 3 days. This way, your goldie will release all the gasses and get back to normal.

To keep your goldfish healthy and happy do not feed your goldfish only flakes. It would be best if you could feed your goldfish fresh household food like vegetables and fruit. These are very tasty and packed with the minerals, vitamins and fibers that flakes do not have. A delicious treat that goldfish love are blood worms, daphnia and brine shrimp.

Remember to always clean your tank of uneaten food after you feed your goldfish. You can make your own recipes using gelatin to bind foods together. You can store it in the fridge and cu a slice when it is time to feed your goldfish. This is a lot of fun.

Goldfishes are very beautiful and an essential thing when people build a new aquarium or a pond. Before we attempt to do a Goldfish aquarium or a Goldfish pond make sure you have known enough about Goldfish and feeding and breeding procedures relating to Goldfishes as it is very essential for Goldfishes to survive.

In order to achieve best results keep male Goldfishes and female Goldfishes separately before their breeding feeding them with quality dry food supplemented with live food. Prepare a pond or an aquarium for Goldfishes carrying a ratio of 3 males and 2 females. All these are basics and you have to know well about Goldfishes for building a better Goldfish pond or Goldfish aquarium. Without doing proper research and plan you will not be going to know about the conditions and equipments required for Goldfishes to survive providing better way of breeding and feeding.

The correct feeding of Goldfishes are very important. Goldfishes should be fed at the same time every day, preferably once in the morning and once in the evening. The food should always be placed in the same spot in the aquarium or pond, and the fish will soon learn to anticipate feeding time. They will beg for food every time they see you – goldfish are always hungry (or at least think they are) – but overfeeding is probably the leading cause of death in older goldfish. Likewise without proper knowledge no one can succefully maintain a Goldfish aquarium or a Goldfish pond with beautiful Goldfishes. Inorder to plan your course of action you have to make a research on Goldfishes. One of the best books i have come across is “Goldfish secrets revealed”.

Keeping Goldfishes can be a very relaxing, rewarding hobby but it can also become stressful if you dont get the right advice so be sure to check that out.

Goldfish question by Kyle: goldfish??
I have never had a goldfish before only tropical. Could I put one in a 10 gallon? If so is there any other small coldwater fish that would get along with it? I understand they are dirty.

Goldfish best answer:

Answer by Allie Mae
If it were me, I would put him by himself and see how big he gets! A friend of mine had one alone in a 10 gallon and it got about 7 inches long!! If you do keep it with smaller fish, he may eventually grow bigger than them anyway and then eat them…

Breeding Goldfish – Goldfish Females Appreciate A Date Done Right Too!

Article by Mark Sturge

Breeding goldfish is actually a fair amount more difficult than most people would think. Much like us humans, Goldfish are rather particular about the conditions in which their little fishy babies will thrive.

Like women, goldfish females appreciate a date done right. They require proper mood lighting and temperature, a nice meal and a romantic environment to “get-it-on”.

To breed your fish, these natural phenomena need to be replicated in order to produce the proper conditions for healthy egg production and maturation.

To get the best chances of success for you’re goldfish breeding, improve the odds. Rather than tossing one girl and one boy fish into the tank, use a two male to one female ratio. Using six goldfish has pretty good possibilities, without overcrowding the tank. The males and females should be kept separated until spawning season, when they can all be joined in one big party.

Preparations for breeding fish should be taken approximately one year prior to spawning season. During this time, it will be your job as matchmaker to replicate the cycle in their natural environment. During the fall, water temperature should be kept cool; around 35-40
